Renowned painter and printer, Gary Lichtenstein demonstrates true abstract expressionism via his spectacular use of color. His paintings and silkscreen prints, more than 200 oil-based and water-based works to date, exhibit mastery of the properties of light absorption and reflection, specifically with regard to the visual impact of color. Inspired by artists such as Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler, Lichtenstein creates canvases which have frequently been described as ethereal, and he has been praised as one who manages to capture a “sense of no-self…” In fact, the composition of Lichtenstein’s work has been referred to as atmospheric... “evocative of natural forms and phenomena.” In addition, Lichtenstein has collaborated with over one hundred artists during the course of his 49-year career. Despite, and because of, rich historical influences, Gary Lichtenstein’s vision and artistic intellect are uniquely his own and clearly evident throughout the enormous portfolio of work that spans his career. Lichtenstein’s work has been shown and collected by, among others, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, the San Francisco Art Institute, the San Francisco International Art Expo, the Chicago Art Institute, the Butler Institute of American Art, the College of Art & Architecture at the University of Tennessee, the Silvermine Arts Center, the International Print Center NYC, the Boston World Art Fair, the New York International Exhibit of Contemporary Art, and Art Asia (Hong Kong). Solo exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Hong Kong have been celebrated at the Rubicon Gallery, Susan Todd Gallery, Galerie Enatsu, and the Modernism Gallery. The Fried screen print collection can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Whitney Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. “Not enough has been written about Gary’s personal work as a painter and printmaker. Although he abandoned his studies, his work betrays his architectural training, showing an underlying sense of structural organization, as well as discipline in materials, planning of spatial relationships, and scale of elements. Over the years, the artist turned to materials that showed his investigations into conceptual questions and metaphysical concerns. Chillida's first stone and plaster creations oscillated between the human world and the natural world using figures and images of landscapes. Consistently guided by the quality of space, density and rhythm, his works consider ways in which mass and volume contain space. His public works, which exist on a more massive scale, not only inhabit the space but also determine a qualifying space of their own. His monumental sculptures, designed for both urban and more secluded spaces, are permanently installed internationally and constitute an important facet of his artistic production. The main retrospectives of Chillida's graphic and sculptural work have been mounted by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (1966); Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1979); National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1979); Guggenheim Museum (1980); Miramar Palace, San Sebastián (1992); and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1999). Robert Indiana's 1997 black leather-covered book portfolio "The American Dream" was printed and published with 30 screenprints: 6 loose each signed and numbered and 24 bound not signed and numbered, as issued. Forward by Susan Ryan, text by Michael McKenzie and poems by Robert Creeley. The book was issued within a white cardboard packing box with red and black lettering. This image is based of Indiana's 1971 screenprint edition "The Calumet", (Sheehan No. 64, page 43), from his 1971 "Decade" series, (Sheehan No. 63-72, page 42-44). The prints in that portfolio reproduce one of Indiana's paintings from each year of the 1960's. The bear they same titles as the corresponding paintings. "The Calumet" is a 1961, 90" x 84", oil on canvas painting which is within the permanent collection of the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. "The Calumet", derived from Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha", reflects Indiana's ongoing involvement with American literary associations and sources. As interpreted, by Indiana, the schematized image of the red clay peace-pipe smoked by the Indians in Longfellow's poem symbolizes mankind's potential to eradicate war. - (Sheehan page 9).
